3D Printers have been around for quite sometime and early pioneers in this were companies like 3D Systems Inc and Stratasys Inc. However as with all early phase technologies, these were prohibitively expensive for all but large corporations. One can imagine the scenario like in the early days of computing when IBM dominated the world and computer engineers worked in lab coats.

With the birth of open source movement which was primarily a European initiative beginning with the development of Linux kernel by Linus Torvalds a new era began. This was formulated beautifully in an essay by Eric Raymond called The Cathedral and the Bazaar. Open source design and manufacturing had begun. In continuation of that legacy, Prof Adrian Bowyer from the University of Bath, UK invented RepRap (Replicating Rapid-prototyper) in 2004, the world first open source 3D Printer. The licenses were available under GNU the open source license. A new era in open source manufacturing was born and the rest as they say is history.

We at BlueStone offer solutions in 3D Printing with a focus on the underlying open source technologies.
